Do you hold the correct licence for safe lifting?
The Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (up to 20 tonnes) is a nationally recognised high risk work unit designed for individuals required to safely operate a slewing mobile crane in construction, civil, logistics, and industrial environments. Participants will be trained and assessed on the practical skills and underpinning knowledge required to plan lifting activities, safely operate a slewing mobile crane with a Maximum Rated Capacity (MRC) up to 20 tonnes, and comply with all relevant workplace health and safety and legislative requirements.

Competency in these units does not automatically grant a High Risk Work Licence. Applicable licensing and processing fees are payable to WorkSafe.

Entry Requirements
To enrol in the Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (up to 20 tonnes) course with Nara Training & Assessing, participants must meet the following requirements:

Be a minimum of 18 years of age.

Demonstrate sound verbal and written comprehension of the English language.

Interpreters and/or online translation support are not permitted in accordance with National Assessment Instrument (NAI) Assessment Guidelines.

All assessments are closed book, completed in English, and no assistance can be provided once assessment has commenced.

Possess sound mathematical skills, as calculation and interpretation of load charts form a significant component of the theory assessment.

Students requiring additional learning support are encouraged to discuss their needs with Nara Training staff prior to course commencement.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Participants must wear:

High-visibility shirt (hi-vis vest can be supplied if required)

Steel-capped safety boots
Identification Requirements

One current photo identification (e.g. Driver’s Licence or Passport)
Upon Successful Completion
Participants who successfully complete the course will be issued with:

Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised unit of competency

Notice of Assessment (NA) — enabling application for a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL)
Course Overview
The Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (up to 20 tonnes) course is designed for individuals who are required to operate a slewing mobile crane safely and legally within construction, civil, logistics, and industrial workplaces.
Training is delivered at Nara Training & Assessing’s purpose-built training facilities, designed to replicate real workplace conditions and provide practical, industry-relevant experience.
Participants will undertake training and assessment in:

Hazard identification and risk control measures

Crane setup and pre-operational inspections
-
Load chart interpretation and safe lifting calculations

Safe crane operation and load handling techniques
-
Communication and coordination with lifting personnel

Shutdown, securing, and post-operational procedures
What to Bring / Wear

Appropriate protective clothing and footwear (no singlets, shorts, or thongs)

Steel-capped boots and hi-vis clothing (mandatory)

PPE such as hi-vis vests and hard hats can be provided if required
Re-sit fees may apply where a participant is deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC).
